THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGYA four-year correspondence school leading to professional practice. 1974-2022 EDUCATING ASTROLOGERS for Forty-Eight Years The Astrology Company PO Box 9237 – Naples, Florida 34101 (239) 261-2840 www.theastrologycompany.com e -mail: bobmulliga@aol.com
THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY OUTLINE FOR THE COMPLETE COURSE OF STUDY THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY classes are given at four different levels of development: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional. The classes build one on another in a modular fashion. Each series of classes is a necessary prerequisite to the next. Homework is required with the beginning classes. The quizzes are fairly easy but they are comprehensive and test exactly what is taught. Even taking the tests is a learning experience. The quality and quantity of homework (as well as the depth of the testing) increases with the Intermediate classes. The Advanced instruction requires a significant amount of reading, studying and self-examination. The Professional teachings are very personal and are hanged to match the needs of each student. The Professional level of study can easily take a year by itself, even when you work on the material several hours each day. At least one major aspect of the curriculum is revised every year. This keeps the material as pertinent and lively as possible. Suggestions and ideas offered by the students enrich the classes. The beginning material is extremely important so that you develop a good foundation and acquire proper study habits. If you learn the beginning material correctly the rest of your life in astrology will be easy. Most people have trouble with astrology because they didn’t get a proper foundation. Therefore, even if you have studied astrology for many years on your own or through other instruction, everyone starts these classes at the beginning level. Every series of classes has homework and tests to be completed before you proceed to the next series. The material is presented in such a way that if you really want to learn, you will. The basic principles are within your grasp, regardless of your perceptual learning biases. Whether you are a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or conceptual learner, the variety of materials will appeal to you. The primary concepts are always presented in written, diagrammatic, and auditory format. We use books, pictures, and sound files. When we find something better than what we are currently using, we change the materials to conform to the new standard. Thus, the materials and caliber of classes is always the highest achievable standard. The Beginning material lays the foundation for all astrological understanding. You learn three distinct skills at the beginning level: first, the recognition and translation of symbols into English; second, the construction of the chart with the meaning of how the various parts of the system fit together, and third, how the chart changes through time. To accomplish this we study the meaning and organization of the four basic coordinate schemes of astrology. The symbolism of the signs, houses, planets and aspects are taught in such a way that all future astrological study is fast and orderly. Even at the beginning level you have practice reading and calculating birth charts. The major systems of forecasting are shown with emphasis on ways of getting quick information and spotting major trends. The Intermediate level material is aimed at increasing your understanding of a natal chart through a process of micro-analysis, enhancing your ability to see trends and events in life through changes in the chart. This is a further expansion of the material from the beginning level. There is stress on learning to spot major trends through the use of secondary progressions and solar arc directions. You will study a number of case histories. General indications from the natal chart are related to aspects of the moment as you learn to isolate significant events. The homework and tests require more thought and the amount of outside reading required is much larger than the beginning material. During this study you will make independent assessments of the sessions of two different astrologers. We start on a long-term analysis of your life direction. At the Advanced level you expand your general understanding of what the field of astrology is all about. Here we demonstrate astrology’s relationship to other areas of knowledge. We emphasize counseling skills and learning how to arrive at conclusions through dialogue. At this time it is important and necessary for each student to come to terms with the meaning of his or her own life. Astrology is a modality of therapy. During the advanced study students go through a process of analysis and self-discovery to find what they can accomplish in this science. We look at your educational experience outside of astrology and continue a plan of life development. Working knowledge of basic psychological concepts, physiological associations, and occult principles are picked up during the course of the Advanced Level work. You make independent appraisal of number of different astrologers’ work, and do a comprehensive study of the work of one modern or historical astrologer that has had a major impact on the field of astrology. By the time you complete this work you have a fundamental grasp of the whole field. The Professional level of THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY material is designed to give you the knowledge you need to open an astrology practice and embark on the path of astrology as a life discipline. Bob Mulligan personally works with you during this training to assist in achieving your professional goals as an astrologer, and to help you develop as a human being. You finish the project started at the intermediate level of making appraisals of astrologers’ client work, and you complete the examination of astrologers’ historical impact on the field. You learn rudimentary business skills that apply to earning a living in astrology. Part of your work at the professional level involves setting up a practice and seeing clients. You are on the road to a successful career in the field of astrology by this time. You learn how to address your own problems, how to get peer supervision and how to contribute to the field. The beauty of any correspondence school is that you can work at your own pace; this is also its greatest weakness: no deadlines. It takes immense self-discipline to keep moving foreword with the material. So much of the material requires long hours of study on your own. We make every opportunity to get you together with other students in your part of the country if you so desire. Others can encourage you forward. You can learn by helping others. The whole course of 96 core classes and 48 specialty classes may easily take you four years to complete. Although the material is self-explanatory, assistance with any difficulty is as near as your telephone or mailbox. If you make the effort to get help from us on any problem with the material we can and will help you
THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY OUTLINE FOR THE BEGINNING CLASSES The beginning classes are designed to show the entire field of astrology in capsule form. There are two basic philosophies of astrology that give two different approaches to teaching the subject: One; astrology reveals information about future events. You learn to see future events by learning the language of astrology. This is accomplished in effect through learning to read maps of the heavens. The application of this knowledge improves your life through assisting you in making better choices and giving you a wider perspective. Two; the symbolism of the zodiac and planets creates a uniquely natural typology of life and of the human personality. Astrology doesn’t describe events but does describe the psychological drives, intentions and motivations behind events. This perception of astrology seems to be in direct opposition to our first viewpoint. These two competing philosophies are really two perspectives on the much larger astrological landscape. Right at the very beginning level, we teach both approaches and a set of techniques for each. This is so you get an accurate picture of astrology from the start. You learn to a primary tool for the forecasting of events. This is all included during the first twenty-four classes. All basic astrological techniques are explored. You will have a basic grasp of these techniques and know how to apply them when you successfully complete these classes. The twenty-four beginning classes are a firm foundation on which to build a deep astrological understanding. The materials for the beginning classes are sent to you in three groups. What is sent to you reflects what you need at the time to move forward in your study. You will receive the following materials in three separate emails during your journey through the beginning classes:
This booklet tells you how to complete each class.
This personal notebook contains: Illustrations of astrological concepts, Example charts, Class notebook paper, Material on chart calculations, Homework instructions, and a place to keep your quizzes, and bibliography material. (You may print this or keep it as a word doc/pdf file)
Every class is recorded as 90-minute sound file and every concept that you are responsible for learning is in audio format.
The chart interpretation sound files are a demonstration of the concepts that you have been learning in class. There is a different sound file to be studied every four classes or two audio files for every series.
The textbooks present the material that you are responsible for learning in a written format. Every concept is presented in these texts. Two volumes of this text accompany every series of classes.
These books are essential to the process of chart calculations.
These are systematic instructions for carrying you through the mathematical concepts of chart calculation while teaching you the principles at the same time.
There are some practice sheets of the natural zodiac for you to practice your skills with the beginning concept.
The beginning material includes diagrams to be colored. The finishing of these diagrams in color using these pens is a powerful way of grasping basic concepts.
The outline of chart interpretation techniques and priorities is one of the several dozen extras that the MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY gives out to help you learn astrology faster and with good orderly habits.
So much confusion emerges at the time that students start learning chart progression. We designed a simple way of grasping the factors in forecasting that are certain. The instructions are systematic and modular.
The most important resource for astrological meaning comes from within your own psyche. These notebooks facilitate your surfacing the material inside of you. The result is that your chart interpretations will be fluid and imbued with meaning. * * * * * THE FIRST SERIES OF CLASSES Class’s #1- #8 assumes no astrological knowledge. You gain a wealth of information about the whole system of astrology. You learn the meaning and symbolism of the four basic building blocks of the field: signs, houses, planets, and aspects. At completion you understand how these fundamental ingredients relate to each other; using these symbols, you are able to say something meaningful about people’s lives based entirely on their charts. The FIRST class gives a general introduction to the philosophy, history, and methods of astrology. The entire project of astrology is laid out here. We briefly examine the four “building blocks” of astrology. We introduce study techniques and “short hand” tools for understanding our culture, your life, and the process of change through the symbols of astrology. The SECOND class shows some simple tricks with the zodiac and explains why the symbolism of the zodiac is so powerful. We discuss the four elements, the seasons of the year, and the meaning of the ecliptic. We look at many valid and instructive divisions of the zodiac. The THIRD class explains the significance of each one of the astrological houses and what they mean to a system as well as individually. The concept of the earth’s rotation as a cycle is such a powerful descriptor of the timing of events. Through this motion we see how the basic coordinate systems of Earth/Sun/person translate longitude, latitude time into meaning. Through the symbols of astrology you learn the beginning correlation of events to the houses. In the FOURTH class we study both the immediate surface associations we can make with the planets as well as the deeper meaning of their symbolism. We look at the planetary tree showing rulership, motion, distance, and meaning. Further, we examine each planetary glyph in some detail. We learn a method to explore each symbol for a wealth of information. In the FIFTH class we study the planetary relationships called aspects. You learn how to recognize and interpret different aspects and aspect patterns in the chart. We explore the different ways to identify aspects in the chart. Further, we examine how aspects impact the basic meaning of the signs, houses, and planets. We look at the historical development of the aspects and what they mean in relationship to each other. The SIXTH class deals with important concepts derived from the four basic building blocks of astrology. These principles help us begin the long process of chart synthesis. Our study includes: aspect patterns; preponderance of aspects; the Moon’s nodes; Part of fortune; planetary dignities; rulership; dispositorship; planetary prominence; and emphasis on an element, mode, hemisphere or quadrant. In the SEVENTH class we discuss three methods of chart synthesis. The first method is the Sun/Moon/ascendant method. The second method is the twelve-letter alphabet. The third method is the purely visual method of the seven planetary types. Using our historical examples we see how any method of synthesis can be used as a starting point to get information. In the EIGHTH class we go deeper into chart analysis, continuing with a case study from our last class. We evaluate possible study techniques for gaining more practical experience. Relevancy of other types of knowledge to your study of astrology is an important topic. We introduce some methods useful for; verifying our insights, and finding ways to glean more shades of meaning from basic chart factors. We discus applications for: the elements and modes, polar opposites, aspects to Midheaven and Ascendant, planetary combinations, and asteroids. * * * * * * THE SECOND SERIES OF CLASSES In Classes #9 – #16 we learn chart construction. The method of instruction is to teach the underlying mathematical and astronomical principles. As the meanings of the angles, measurements, distances, and relationships become evident, the specific mathematical techniques become obvious. This study is used to enrich the understanding of the chart. You gain a deeper feeling for how the specific pieces fit together as a higher meaning of the symbolism emerges in you. This method of instruction allows you to overcome any lingering math phobia. The NINTH class deals with essential formulas for planets in signs and houses. We discuss the significance of different forms of time measurement. We see how different time conventions are used. We look at why different forms of time are used for different purposes. We learn how to calculate the Ascendant and the Midheaven. By doing this we start the process of setting up the houses of the astrology chart. In the TENTH class we learn how to find the positions of the planets and place them on the chart wheel. Our way of accomplishing this task gives you a deeper feeling for planetary motion in relation to the Earth/Sun system. We work with aspects and planetary combinations at a deeper level of meaning. We emphasize study techniques to simplify and enrich the learning process. The ELEVENTH class we study planetary Arrangements. We look at planetary containment and the concept of planetary ordering. We will examine the planet of oriental ascension, and vocational indicators. We examine the order and circumstances of the Sun, Mercury, and Venus. We give special attention to the containments of the Moon. We examine these concepts as they manifest in our example charts. The TWELFTH class shows some of the techniques of working with rulership. We discuss rulership by sign and by house, dispositorship, mutual reception, final dispositors, dignity, strength and accidental dignity. The web of the chart comes together around this concept, and so we will work with some beginning chart interpretation techniques. In the THIRTEENTH class we work with the meaning of the triangulation of planet, sign, and house. This is the real origin and meaning go the 12-letter alphabet. We work with how different levels of the alphabet work with each other. We learn the similarities of sign, house, and planet as well as their differences. We examine why the 12 letter alphabet is such a powerful study technique. The FOURTEENTH class discusses the three outer planets and their relationship to Saturn. We will take up the meaning of the events at the time of the discovery of the three outer planets. This is the beginning of our understanding of why certain people are born at specific times. We see how individual lives relate to the happenings in the general culture. The FIFTEENTH class discusses the meaning of Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus in historical figures’ charts. We take up the inner significance of the outer planets. We see how each individual deals with givens in their society and how we each at some level personalize the energy and meaning of the outer planets. The SIXTEENTH class is devoted to Chart Interpretation, Chart Types and Rulership. I demonstrate how I personally start a chart reading. We discuss how you adjust a consultation to the level, interest, and age of a client. We examine the reason for the astrologer and client getting together in the first place. We take up the concept of looking at the chart as a whole. THE THIRD SERIES OF CLASSES In classes #17 – #24 our goals are to gain experience in chart delineation and to see the inherent connection between the birth chart and life events. The completion of these classes is the beginning of your understanding of how it all works. You now have a condensed form of the whole astrological process as part of your makeup. The world of astrological understanding is before you now. In the SEVENTEENTH class introduces the basic concepts of predictive work. In this class we work with the purely natal chart techniques. We examine the natal promise then explore possible Natal chart techniques for deciphering timing of events. The emphasis here is how we know that something is ever going to happen then secondly, when it will happen. The EIGHTEENTH We have the overview of all predictive techniques we are using in these classes. We discuss transits, Secondary progressions, Solar Arc Directions, Return charts, the history of forecasting. The NINETEENTH class deals with transits. We work with the day to day movements of the planets. We will concentrate on ways of working with the ephemeris, so as to learn how to isolate important periods of time. We will discuss the meaning of these transits through the signs and houses. Further, we will work with the meaning of universal cycles in personal life. The TWENTIETH class gives hybrid methods of working with transit. We will discuss the virtue of the 45 degree graphic ephemeris. We will show examples of how transits have been useful in forecasting events in everyday life. Further we will talk about the transiting aspects and how they affect everyone. Also, we will discuss transit to transit patterns and how they affect us all. The TWENTY-FIRST class we construct the secondary progressed chart and look at the logic behind the model. In this class we discuss the mathematics necessary to use these major forecasting techniques. Since the calculations are based on simple principles, they can be explained in a way that is easy to understand and remember. Once the principles have been grasped, correct application only requires practice. The TWENTY-SECOND class we work with Solar Arc Directions. After constructing the solar arc chart we look at various options for their practical application. Case histories will demonstrate the key concepts. Sometimes the solar arc directions show things that are difficult to find in other systems. In the TWENTY-THIRD class we look at how secondary progressions and solar arcs describe the same events. By applying both systems to the same events we can view the relative value that each method brings to the study of forecasting events. In the TWENTY-FOURTH class we move from theory to practice. We will do a case history showing the full spectrum of tools need to peer into the future. We will look at the various ways of integrating secondary progressions, solar arc directions, and transits. All techniques together reveal psychological changes as well as the timing of events. What methods to use and when to use them is a continuing discussion in astrology.
THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY OUTLINE FOR THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL By the time you are able to take the Intermediate Level classes (#25 to #48) you have completed and successfully passed the 24 Beginning level lessons of The Mastery of Astrology. We have two major goals to achieve during the intermediate level classes:
As we are accomplishing our two major goals in the intermediate classes you will learn examine astrological themes within the chart to understand how they translate into events. We examine the cognitive decision making process of the astrologer to understand how we move from reading the chart to dialogue with clients. This approach is greatly expanded in the advanced material, but we introduce the key concepts now. Much of the material in these classes is a condensation of older correspondence school classes that took two years to complete taking classes at the rate of one a week. The amount of material is massive, but I will provide you with some of my own text material which you can read before and after the classes. This will help you greatly in your study. To complete the Intermediate Level classes and go on to the Advanced Level, you will need to pass a comprehensive exam and finish some homework that is more complex than just memorizing concepts and repeating them back. You will need to make judgments and seek out material outside of the class instruction and comment on it. You will be required to evaluate two different astrology sessions from two different astrologers. By doing this you will start getting a picture of what astrology as a field is about. Materials for the intermediate classes are sent out in three groups. One package of materials is sent out at the out at the start of a new series of classes, and reflects what you need to do the next work:
This booklet gives you instructions on how to complete each class and some special help in preparing for advanced study.
This allows you to organize your work, it contains homework instructions, summary points for each class, and outlines for each chart study.
Every class is recorded as 90-minute sound file giving you every concept you are responsible to learn.
There is a new chart interpretation sound file every four classes. The Intermediate audio sets are G to L. They demonstrate the material needed to accurately forecast using Secondary Progressions, Solar Arc Directions, and Transits.
These texts are a PDF version of the materials on sound file for the classes and cover every concept in the intermediate classes at the rate of one chapter per class. (You may print them, but they are lengthy and can be viewed on Kindle/iPad, etc. as well.)
* The Zodiac as a Complete System of Chart Interpretation. Volume, I and II. * The Astrological Houses as a Complete System of Chart Interpretation. Volume I and II. * The Planets as a Complete System of Chart Interpretation. Volume I and II. * The Astrological Aspects as a Complete System of Chart Interpretation. Volume I and II.
* * * * * * THE FOURTH SERIES OF CLASSES The fourth series of classes provides you with a much wider theoretical base a more thorough and integrated understanding of what the natal and progressed horoscope is about. Although we learned the theory and math behind the natal and progressed chart, it is not possible to get much certain information from the chart unless you have practice in the process of putting the pieces of the chart together into a consistent picture of the person’s life. The concepts in this series are put together in a manner which allows you to see the whole chart at once. The TWENTY-FIFTH class (MATH AND MEANING) reviews all the math for calculating a chart, but emphasizes the categories of meaning in the measurement and motion of the symbols. This opens the door for your inner nature to give spontaneous interpretations of the chart. Further, we discuss the meaning of the Zodiac, the Houses, and the Planets in relationship to each other’s various motions. The TWENTY-SIXTH class (SPOTTING STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS) covers the major techniques for deciphering the relative strength of a planetary placement. The easy and difficult aspects will be discussed with examples of counseling techniques which are useful for the astrologer. The TWENTY-SEVENTH class (KEYWORDS OR KEYTHOUGHTS?) is devoted to the techniques which move your thinking on the metaphors of planetary conditions to a deeper understanding of the whole astrological system by understanding the role of You will learn how to reinforce your basic insights and move from a purely quantitative approach like the twelve letter alphabet to a qualitative approach which recognizes the uniqueness of each chart and chart placement. The TWENTY-EIGHTH class (CHART PRIORITIES) is devoted to demonstrating recurring themes in a chart with historical examples. The purpose for learning this skill is so that you get practice seeing how psychological propensities are translated by the individual’s attitudes into activities and event. The TWENTY-NINTH class (THE METAPHYSICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHART) takes up the all important questions of how the chart refers to things in life. This is accomplished by a discussion of the DIVINE THEME of evolution, reincarnation and involution. The THIRTIETH class (COUNSELING JUDGEMENTS) shows how to get from the details of the chart to counseling the specific real needs of your client. We take up the topic of how you verbalize your insights to others and how you appraise the impact on the recipient of your analysis. This is initial “Damage control” to make sure that you aren’t creating more issues. The THIRTY-FIRST class (TIME AND TIMING) deals with transiting cycles and their relationship to the natal chart. We learn which planets are the most accurate timing devices and how to judge the quality of a natal chart response to specific transits. We examine the meaning of planetary cycles of the planets to natal patterns. The THIRTY-SECOND class (TIMING WITH SECONDARY PROGRESSIONS) shows how to isolate possibilities in a client’s chart for a given period of time. We discuss the meaning of personal psychological unfoldment in relationship to events within the individual’s life. We are interested in not just what is happening, but why it is happening. * * * * * * THE FIFTH SERIES OF CLASSES The fifth series of classes are aimed at increasing your depth of understanding the horoscope and improving your technical versatility. This is accomplished through the practice of making the zodiac the center of your chart interpretation and using it as a complete system. We look at how to get information from a chart using the meaning of the signs and their many subdivisions as a primary tool. We introduce a complete system of degree meanings. We approach the astrological houses in a similar manner. We will work with minor divisions of the houses but also focus on techniques that are unique to the house system of organization. The THIRTY-THIRD class (THE SIGNS OF SPRING) focuses on the meaning of the signs Aries, Taurus, and Gemini. We look most closely at useful minor divisions of signs of the zodiac. We discuss the relative importance of harmonic divisions of the signs. The THIRTY-FOURTH class (THE SIGNS OF SUMMER) we will explore the signs Cancer, Leo, and Virgo. We will explore the meaning of the signs themselves and how they combine in aspect patterns. The purpose here is to understand the type of information we get through combining energy from different signs regardless of the planetary bodies making the aspects. The THIRTY-FIFTH class (THE SIGNS OF FALL) will be concerned with Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. We will work with degree symbolism and how this fits in with fixed stars, precession and nodal placements. Here, we examine the way meaning can emerge through the smallest subdivision of a sign. The THIRTY-SIXTH class (THE SIGNS OF WINTER) will finish up the zodiac system with our attention on Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Here we see how the process of the zodiac if internalized by the individual to reveal a pattern of unique development shown in the natal chart. The THIRTY-SEVENTH class (THE QUADRANT OF PERSONALITY) starts a group of lessons devoted to house techniques. We work in detail with the 1dst, 2nd, and 3rd houses. The purpose of study here is to examine the different ways events normally associated with the houses of the first quadrant can be indicated. The THIRTY-EIGHT class (THE QUADRANT OF THE ENVIRONMENT) continues the study of house orientated techniques. We examine the 4th, 5th, and 6th houses, and verify ways of judging events connected with the second quadrant. We look at the way a person’s emotional life gets associated with this area of the horoscope. The THIRTY-NINTH class (THE QUADRANT OF RELATIONSHIPS) we work with the 7th, 8th, and 9th houses. The techniques involving the quadrant of relationships are put under the microscope. We show how a planet can be in a house three different ways. Further, we examine how there various techniques relate to each other. The FORTIETH class (THE QUADRANT OF SERVICE) finishes our work eight the house system of interpretation. We will work with the 10th, 11th, and 12th houses now. The special fourth quadrant techniques expand our understanding of how we make judgments about a person’s impact on others. * * * * * * THE SIXTH SERIES OF CLASSES
The FORTY-FIRST class (The Personal Planets) shows how to center your chart interpretation on The Sun, The Moon, and Mercury. We discuss how you can get meaningful and personal information from the circumstances of these three planetary placements one. The relationship between these three reveals much. Their motions at birth, as well as by progression and transit, reveal aspects of character. The FORTY-SECOND class (The Planets of Gender) focuses on techniques involving Venus and Mars and shows how you can tell much about a person from just these two placements. We look at how important planetary ordering can be and how the relative position of planets to each other can describe meaning. The FORTY-THIRD class (The Social Planets) revolves around Jupiter and Saturn and how they tell the story of the individual’s socialization process. How much information can be extracted from a chart based on the circumstances of these two planets is truly amazing. We look at individual and generational influence shown inherently in their 20 year cycle. The FORTY-FORTH class (The Transcendent Planets) shows specific charting techniques examine the individual’s relationship to the culture, the society and the cosmos. We always personalize relying on the circumstances of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Using example charts we examine the three transcendental planets; they indicate our relationship to the larger universe. The transits of the outer planets time the release of our latent potentials. In the FORTY-FIFTH class (The Core Aspects) we will look at the core of the chart through the Conjunction, the Opposition and the Square aspects. We discuss the meaning of a preponderance of an aspect and what this can tell us about an individual’s psychology and their way of approaching events. In the FORTY-SIXTH class (The Harmonious Aspects) we will evaluate the chart in terms of the Sextile, the Trine, the Semi-Sextile, and the Quincunx. We examine different types of psychological growth shown by the aspects in the chart and how the meaning of these aspects translates into events. The FORTY-SEVENTH class (The Excitement Aspects) will be a discussion of the Semi-Square, the Sesquiquadrate, the Parallel and Contra-Parallel. We see what these aspects can reveal about a natives mind and ability to achieve self improvement. Reorganization and attunement to the larger picture of life is the key theme. In the FORTY-EIGHTH class ( Organization of Symbols) we deal with the most practical issues of how to organize a chart reading. We will grapple with theoretical issues; why a symbol system works. We focus on the issues of how to use your knowledge to convey important practical concerns to a client. This is a recurring theme in our study. We take it up in this class at a new level of analysis.
The Intermediate Level Short Courses These Elective classes or Short Courses are a requirement for anyone wishing to complete the professional Level of training. They can be taken in any order, at any time. Completing the Beginning Level is the only prerequisite. All the Short Courses assumes knowledge from the beginning classes. The entire group of courses must be completed at some time before finishing the Advanced Level. Some of the classes here present information useful in understanding the advanced work. It can be useful to take them between the Intermediate and Advanced Levels. Some of the work here requires quite a stretch until you have developed astrological insight. The study of astrology should always be fun, but this material is particularly enjoyable. So much of the work here applies to astrological judgments that we make in our everyday life. These classes can be taken at any time and in any order. There is a special Certificate of Achievement when they are all completed. The five topics taken up with the classes are aimed at familiarizing the student with the literature on chart comparison, mundane techniques, medical astrology, electional astrology, and horary. These classes have a slightly different flavor than the core course curriculum. They are high information content like the regular classes, with materials and viewpoints from a number of different sources. The important literature in each area is reviewed. The tests check the knowledge of the student. Much reading and study is required for each class. There is a separate brochure available describing each course in detail. Request this information when you are ready to start this work. * * * * * The Twenty-four classes on Synastry are pure technique classes presenting the current available literature for cross study and comparison. Every current chart comparison idea and tool in use today is demonstrated in these classes. The Eight classes on Mundane Astrology are for the purpose of showing how everyone is affected by certain large phenomenon. We look at the history of nations and geographic and political pictures of the world. We extract certain techniques for working with clients. The astrology of the world, nations, and geographic areas effect individual clients and these thinks can be seen astrological. We examine the relationship between the big picture and individual lives as seen through the horoscope. The Eight classes on Physical Astrology take up the study of physical appearance, demeanor, and health as shown in the astrology chart. This is meant to lay the foundation for serious study of medical astrology. The material here has a different flavor and is meant to supplement the Eighth series of classes, which also deals with the physical aspect of astrology. The Four classes on Electional Astrology present the history of the thinking on the subject and lots of current examples to show what works and what does not. You will doubtless use your skill at electional work all the time. This class is to make sure that you do it to the best of your ability. The Four classes on Horary Astrology show the history of the literature on the subject and lots of examples of how the most known authors’ ideas have played out in practice. This is a mysterious subject. Horary rules are often self-contradictory, cumbersome, and seemingly arbitrary, yet, many great astrologers have made their fame and fortune in this arena. We look at the most basic, “whys” and “wherefores” of the system so that you can proceed with the craft. Details are available on this class when you finish the prerequisite material. THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY OUTLINE FOR THE ADVANCED LEVEL To be in the Advanced Level classes (#49 to #72) you have passed the first 48 lessons of The Mastery of Astrology. This is quite an accomplishment. Beyond this point the work intensifies. The level of homework and private study increases. You will need to spend more time in self examination and in reading and thinking in order to make progress. This material is revised tremendously at every teaching because it approaches the frontiers of modern astrology. Every class in the advanced level can easily be expanded in your personal study to be as much work as a whole series of classes. You will need personal drive in order to correctly prepare yourself in the process of this level of work. To be a competent astrologer is a huge accomplishment. These classes prepare the way. The instruction at the Advanced Level will increase your technical expertise and familiarize you with many systems of astrology that will be new for you. But, these are not the real purposes of the classes. For, you could just study this material on your own with no formal training. The aim of the Advanced Level classes is to teach you three things: First, we learn how to counsel a client. What you need to know from extra- astrological systems of psychology, counseling, social work, and anthropology. The integration of the different social sciences in light of the astrological model enriches your ability to see your clients’ circumstances. Second, through the study of alternate systems of astrology and the astrology of different cultures we are able to see the symbiosis between the astrology and the culture. Further we are able to examine how our perspective is colored by the limitations an prejudges of our knowledge system. Third, through understanding of the occult and the spiritual path, the way energy and the emotions work, you are able to bring yourself into attunement with the higher purpose of your own study of astrology. It may take you journeying this far in your study, but you will now know why you are here. The Beginning Level student is encouraged to pay little attention to their own chart. The intermediate student is occupied with techniques, and examines many circumstances not available to check their lives. However, our strategy switches dramatically at the Advanced level. Your own life becomes the focus of the classes. All of your homework revolves around your chart and the circumstances in your life experiences so far. The materials for the Advanced Level classes are sent at the start of each class. Each class has homework that must be completed in order to go on to the next class.
This allows you to organize your work, it contains homework instructions, summary points for each class, and outlines for each chart study.
There is a new chart interpretation sound file every four classes.
* * * * * * THE SEVENTH SERIES OF CLASSES The Seventh series of classes (#49 to #56) helps you explore the inner dynamics of the client/astrologer interaction. Using your understanding of both the natal and progressed horoscope we work on using personal interaction to effect change. Special counseling issues are taken up to aid a client in making the internal changes upon which the external changes are based. We build on these astrological counseling tools in order to briefly explore very complex and intimately practical areas of astrological work. We also look at the spiritual dimension of astrology during these classes. The FORTY-NINTH class explores the general rules for giving professional advice. We look at the process and effect of giving information to your clients. We list the counseling tools necessary to have a positive and successful astrologer/client relationship. These “dos” and “don’ts” are a logical extension of learning to ask the right questions from your clients and their charts. We put your relationship to your clients under the microscope. The FIFTIETH class deals with specific counseling dilemmas. You can turn the differences between astrology and other forms of therapy to your client’s advantage. The uniqueness of the astrological approach to problem solving is explored. The FIFTY-FIRST class explores the counseling situations with short case histories. Specific examples are used in order to address large categories of experience in the psychological dynamic that includes the psyche of the astrologer, the psyche of the client and the events in life. We understand these principles as they manifest in our example charts. We synthesis the most useful techniques from various systems. The FIFTY-FOURTH class we examine the dynamic between astrologer and client as a message. We look at client as a spiritual omen in the astrologer but also the astrologer as a specific message for the client. We examine the use of synastry between astrologer and client, as well as the use of first meeting and event charts in work of the astrologer and client. We develop a way of examining the karma between the two. The FIFTY-FIFTH class takes an overview of the field of psychological astrology. The different models of the human psyche are compared to the traditional models of the human situation. We explore the view from the astrological perspective of how the mind, body, and emotions fit together. A new model of person to person interaction is introduced. In the FIFTY-SIXTH class we examine esoteric astrology. We understand why people look to astrology as an enhancement to their spiritual or magical development. We discuss motivation, energy, and the emotional body. We come to an understanding here of the uses and abuses of techniques meant to speed up one’s development. We explore applications of the Alice Bailey work to spiritual development. * * * * * * THE EIGHTH SERIES OF CLASSES The eight series of classes (#57 to #64) are aimed at increasing your technical knowledge of other systems of astrology so that you may start developing your own unique style. Here we discuss techniques from many different cultures and systems in order to see the connection thread between all of them. Our own skills become better through understanding the cultural significance of different systems of astrology. Alternate systems of astrology which developed in Burma, India, and China help us understand how our culture affects our astrology and how our astrology affects our culture. In the FIFTY-SEVENTH class applies rectification techniques to various example charts. Forecasting techniques reversed brings locate the time from the events. Through the use of case histories the idea of locating the uncertain birth time is explored. The introduction to several productive systems is introduced. The FIFTY-EIGHTH class looks at the history, system, and techniques of sidereal astrology. We look at the comparison of tropical and sidereal zodiacs, discuss the work of Firebrace, Fagan and other prominent siderealists. We look at the reasons and research for using fixed stars, and corrections for precession and stellar parallax. The FIFTY-NINTH class we look at the practical use of harmonics and wave theory on your work. We look at the historical roots of these theories in Indian Astrology and in the work of Pythagoras. We focus on the works of John Addey and of David Cochrane primarily. The SIXTIETH class is an introduction to Burmese Astrology. We examine the techniques given by Barbara Cameron and Eric Solibakke which are called the Mahabote. We will understand how an entirely different cultural paradigm can affect our work here today. In the SIXTY-FIRST class we look at Indian astrology to understand how concepts of harmonics and periodicity have affected our practice in the west. We will look at the two best ways to take up the serious study of an Indian System of astrology. The SIXTY-SECOND class is a survey of Chinese astrology. We spend time looking at the ideas we have imported from the Chinese on elements, periods of rotation, and the 12 year cycle. We look at ways to study the Chinese system without being able to read Chinese. The SIXTY-THIRD class is an introduction to Uranian astrology. The system is vast and much of the material for this class is in printed form. We demonstrate how to take charts that we have worked with in earlier classes, and we see how the Uranian techniques demonstrate the same information. In the SIXTY-FOURTH class we take an overview of the field of Cosmobiology. We look at the 90 degree dial, midpoints, and the 45 degree ephemeris sequence. Our conversation in this class revolves around ways of using these techniques in regular everyday practice to facilitate work with clients. * * * * * * THE NINTH SERIES OF CLASSES The Ninth series of classes (#65 to #72) brings us to the cutting edge of modern astrological practice. Research techniques are discussed; you are responsible for completing some research project and drawing meaningful, and useful, conclusions. Further, we examine what is called neo- astrology, wave theory and harmonics. Here we will get closer on the issue of developing a personal style. A close study of the history of astrology and the historical techniques of our past helps give a more rounded picture of where we are today. Techniques from traditional systems of astrology are explored in these classes. Our discussion includes a study of astrology’s use in magical work as well as astrology’s relationship to society. While we examine technical aspects of astrology we are pursuing the emotional groundings of the field. The SIXTY-FIFTH class is the introduction to research techniques. This class is an introduction to history, theory and method of astrological research. We look at the occult basis of the research mind-set and how the assumptions, desires and motivations alter the way a research mindset and how the assumptions, desires and motivations alter the way a research project unfolds. In the SIXTY-SIXTH class we talk about how to develop a research project. How to limit it to something you can complete and why we bother doing research if our focus is on client work. We talk about how your research will affect the way you grow as an astrologer. In the SIXTY-SEVENTH class we look at practical applications of the astrological techniques of ancient astrology. We look at the usefulness today of the works that have been translated from Greek, Latin, and Arabic by astrologers living in the last part of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. We are especially indebted to Rob Hand Robert Schmidt, and Robert Zollar. The SIXTY-EIGHTH class is an overview of modern techniques often referred to as “neo astrology”. We examine the foundations of our modern age as a prelude to understanding the creation and ultimate purpose of the transitional techniques as we approach a new cycle of history. In the SIXTY-NINTH class we will look briefly at a history of astrology techniques. Our reason for doing this is to understand the occult and spiritual striving that becomes a foundation for the particular approach favored by a culture, then favored in its astrological techniques. This is as close as we can get to crossing out of our own frame-of-reference and our own frame-of-reference and observing it, while still being in it. The SEVENTIETH class we look at the use of astrology in the practice of magic. What is the program? What is the system of belief and how these techniques can be employed for self-development? We work on the concept of how the astrologers self development impacts the client. We examine the combination of eastern and western approaches to life’s ultimate purpose. In the SEVENTY-FIRST class we examine the concept of astrology and self-acceptance. We struggle to change and in the final analysis we have to find our place in the universe, society, and ourselves. This is a probing look into understanding the chart as a spiritual message and helping us understand our own real selves as a prerequisite to assisting our clients in the process of accepting themselves and finding their spot. In the SEVENTY-SECOND class we talk about the astrologer’s social conditions. Who are you anyway? Why should the universe support you in your effort to earn a living as an astrologer? Wait ‘til you see the homework assignment here. I have a personal interest in your success. This is part of my social contribution. THE MASTERY OF ASTROLOGY OUTLINE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL CLASSES After successfully completing the Advanced Level of astrological study you are ready to take the Professional Level of classes in the Mastery of Astrology series. These classes are designed to show you how to take your craft and earn a living with what you have learned. Further we explore the more important issue of how to use the science and art of astrology as a path of self development as you move through life. Whereas the Advanced classes are very tedious, these classes are fun and relatively easy because they directly connect with your everyday work. The materials for the professional Level change as do the class content with each person. As with the Advanced level classes, the Professional classes are given one at a time with homework being required with each lesson. Although the class content changes to reflect individual needs, the homework and exams are standard. Most of the written homework requires filling in your Personal Plan Workbook which accompanies the classes. THE TENTH SERIES OF CLASSES As you take the Tenth series of classes you will set up an astrological practice. We work on the practical decisions of advertising, marketing, cost projection, planning a budget. We work on ways of getting your message out to people. We work on ways of building a clientele. We examine your attitude toward money and discuss the ethics of the profession. THE ELEVENTH SERIES OF CLASSES The eleventh series of classes seek to familiarize you with corporate astrology so that you can explore personal options for your own future. We discuss your background and finding the natural environment in which you operate best. Personnel work and financial astrology are consistent themes that we study during these classes. THE TWELFTH SERIES OF CLASSES The twelfth series of classes are aimed at helping you do four things. One, plan the correct use of your time. Two, work with groups and organizations. Three, deal with personal disappointment and failure. Four, make a personal life plan including a continuing education plan and defining goals, objectives, and projects. *********************************************************************** Requirements to graduate:
One, on the impact of an historical astrologer Two, on the effect of a contemporary astrologer on the field
Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions How much time: Question: Does it really take four years to complete the classes? Answer: You can finish the classes at your own pace. You can stop and start them at any time. It is possible to complete the classes in a much shorter time increment than taking them one level a year. If the thought of taking four years to complete these classes is depressing to you, consider a few things. One, you can practice astrology with no restrictions while you are learning. If you are going to be a good astrologer you will go on learning astrology for the rest of your life. The time spent learning the material will be fun. When it seems long and burdensome you are perhaps being too goal oriented in your thinking and need to become more focused on the process. Astrology is a grand and highly technical profession. You would not anticipate being able to become a doctor, lawyer or architect in less study time than four years. Considering the project, four years it is not an unreasonable time commitment. If you are hungry to learn, wishing to immerse yourself in the study, the beginning classes can be completed in three months and the intermediate classes can be completed in six months. Faster than this? If you wish, but this is about right for a nine month “fast track”. I recommend everyone complete the beginning level quickly then slow down to learn deeply at the intermediate level. The advanced and professional levels usually take a year each to complete. The short courses can be completed during the two years of the advanced and professional training. How much money: Question: If I take all the classes how much money will I pay and when do I have to pay it? Answer: Every series of 8 classes costs $250 and is paid at the start of a new series. You have the option of paying for an entire level at once for the cost of $ 675. If you choose to pay a level at a time, the cost for all four levels (96 classes) is $2700. The 48 classes of the Intermediate short classes can be paid for at $675 for 24 classes or $250 paying for them 8 at a time. The complete 144 classes costs $4050, or alternately, paying for the classes eight at a time costs $4500 over the entire duration of the four years of classes. You may wonder if there are any further hidden costs. We have tried as much as we are able to have all of the material that you need to own for the classes are part of the regular tuition. You may wish to purchase other astrological material during your course of study that is not covered in the classes. You will need to review the consultations of 10 practicing astrologers in order to complete graduation requirements. It is not necessary for you to have your own chart examined by each of these astrologers in order to complete this requirement. You may have travel expenses if you do not live close to a good library as you enter the higher levels of your training. It is recommended at the advanced level that you own a computer and some specific software, but this is not required. At the professional level you will doubtless want to invest in some further equipment as you are setting up your own practice. This is of course, optional. How Many Classes: Question: How many Classes are there in all? Answer: There are 144 classes in all? If you were to spread them out evenly over a four-year period you would take 36 classes every year. This is less than one per week. Taking one class per week is realistic progress, but the work usually goes quicker at the beginning level then slows down. The higher the level the greater the work required to complete the classes. What can you do when you complete the classes? Question: What will I be prepared to do with my astrological training when I’m done with the classes? Answer: If you take the complete course of study you will not only be capable of operating your own astrological practice, but you will be set up in it, and earning a living as an astrologer by the time you graduate. Some people take the classes knowing they are not planning on developing an astrological practice; but instead, plan on using astrology as an adjunct to some other career. In this case, this training pays big dividends in other careers in the arena of: timing, understanding people and their motivation, giving you a larger picture of what is happening in the world, when it is happening and why. But, the really big dividend from your study of astrology is the deep level of self-understanding that emerges gradually in the course of your study. After completing the Beginning level of astrology you will understand how to set up a chart. Further, you will understand how to interpret it and how the major astrological techniques are applied to the life of a specific person. When you complete the Intermediate level of the Mastery of Astrology classes, you will be capable of calculating and interpreting any chart as well as applying systematic forecasting techniques in a responsible and meaningful way to any chart. When you complete the advanced training you will be capable of applying astrological principles to any and every situation in life. With the completion of the professional training you will have your own astrological practice up and operating. Examinations, quizzes, homework: Question: Is it possible to take all the examinations and quizzes at home? Answer: Yes, it is possible to take every quiz and exam at home, except the final examination. Every exam and quiz, except the final, is completely “open book”. You may use any material to complete the quizzes and homework that you wish. Further, you may ask for help if you are stuck on any part of the homework or material for the quizzes. You have as much time for each exam, quiz, and homework assignment as you need and, you may take as many breaks as you like. The final exam is, of course, the final test of your knowledge and is given without charge over a two day period, in person, for any student whom has completed the other requirements for graduation. Help available: Question: How can I get help if I get stuck on something in the classes? Answer: We encourage you to call if you have any questions about the material or the requirements. If you would like another student to get together with you over the phone or a tutor, we can arrange this for you. We also answer any submitted questions in writing. It is our desire and design to have answers to every question available for you any time one emerges. Astrology is not an easy study and we wish to help you explore every issue, in your own way. We want you satisfied. Why everyone starts at the beginning: Question: I’ve been a professional astrologer for ten years, can I bypass the Beginning and Intermediate Level classes and just takes your Advanced and Professional training? Answer: It is not uncommon for colleges to allow students to transfer credits from another school and to continue their study in this manner. It can meaningfully be asked why we do not give credit for other classes you have taken or for life experience. The larger issue here is the problem that there is no standardized training in astrology and the instruction here is systematic and modular, one “conceptual block” building upon another. There is no way at this time to be sure that your knowledge is firm unless you start at the beginning. If you find it distasteful to start at the beginning you will probably not have the patience or temperament to complete the classes successfully anyway. Many people who have long years of experience in the field breeze through the earlier levels of the material upon entering the school. In the future, as there are more schools of astrology and more systematic instruction, it may be possible to have some reasonable transferable reciprocity or proficiency exam. Ongoing changes in the classes: Question: I thought of a better way of teaching some concept while I was taking the classes. Can the material be changed? Answer: If you come up with a better way of teaching a concept, share it with us. The courses are revised all the time. When the classes are changed in any way, we do our very best to keep them compatible with the existing classes. Every year at least one element of the classes is upgraded to respond to new ideas and teaching methods. Taking a Break: Question: A personal crises came up in another area of my life while in my course of study. I need to take a break. Will this have a negative impact on my study? Answer: You can stop and start the classes at any time. If you let us know when you are stopping your study for a while we do the best we can to make your transition in and out of the classes orderly and integrated into your larger life plan. When you complete your study: Question: What happens when I complete my study? Answer: When you complete your study, in addition to having the knowledge of astrology, your own astrological practice, and several friends in astrology, you will have achieved integration into the larger astrological community. Future use of resources: Question: Can I still make use of The Astrology Company resources after graduating from the classes? Answer: Yes, long after you have completed your astrological study, you can still attend weekend retreats to improve your skills; you can use our library for further study, and the school “bulletin board” to keep track of astrological events, conferences, the careers of your contemporaries. How long per class: Question: I’m married and have a regular job. Is it possible for me to find the time to do these classes? Answer: Each class will take you between three to five hours of time to do properly. Consequently, you need discipline and regular study time each day and each week in order to make steady reliable progress. Obviously, you need to be highly motivated in order to take these classes. We know this and endeavor to make them as exciting and as enjoyable as possible. The process of self-enrichment that comes with the study of astrology has to be great in order to justify your investment of time and money in the classes. You are not only investing in your future, the classes are so exciting you’re investing in your present. What about College: Question: Must I have a college degree in order to complete the Mastery of Astrology’s education requirement? Answer: No, the education requirement is to make sure that you know something about life by virtue of having studied it systematically. If you have a B.A. or B.S. degree or an advanced degree from a recognized accredited college or university, this satisfies the requirement. If you have not completed this type of work and don’t wish to or are not able to, we can work with you in order to help you “round out” and finish some traditional knowledge base. The point is, astrology can’t be studied in a vacuum. You need to know something about life in order to apply astrology to it. If you have the drive, we will help you. Without a college degree, this work is more difficult, but it can be done.
